To help us make the very best use of your kindness, we kindly ask everyone to follow this simple rule of thumb:

👉 If not, please dispose of it instead.

Unfortunately, more and more time is being spent sorting through items that are broken, ripped, stained, incomplete, or unsuitable. Every extra hour doing this is an hour less spent helping those who need us most.

✅ We can accept:

• Clean clothing & textiles

• Usable household items in working order

• Toys that are complete & in good condition

• Presentable furniture

• Clean white goods in safe working order

• ​

❌ We cannot accept:

• Damaged or soiled items

• Broken electricals

• Unsafe goods

• Sofas without a valid fire safety certificate

• Anything that cannot legally or safely be passed on

It’s also important to note that recyclers (rag merchants, book dealers, and bric-a-brac traders) have reduced the prices they pay — and many items they once accepted they now refuse. Sadly, this means unsuitable donations often have to be disposed of at the tip, which costs us both time and resources.

This isn’t just an issue for Selby Hands of Hope — it affects all charities. By giving with thought and kindness, you help us — and every charity — focus our resources where they are needed most.
